“Lights” – Ellie Goulding

Pure and simple pop is where it’s at today.  Ellie Goulding is the latest UK breakthrough artist to make waves in indie circles Stateside.  I really love Ellie’s slightly affected vocals with the steady beat.  The sample I’ve selected jumps in near the tail end of the chorus leading into a break of long, smooth “home” juxtaposed to short, sharp “lights.”  And just when things start getting a little too sweet, there’s a nice drop-off effect and rewind back into the chorus.  I love how this pause emphasizes the entrance back into the chorus.

Finally, thanks to Hailey P. for recommending Ellie Goulding to me.  This likely won’t be the last time you hear from Hailey P – she too, has great taste.

More pop goodness can be found here (apparently you need to wait a week to purchase in the US).
